Lightspeed Venture Partners was founded in 2000 by Chris Schaepe, Barry Eggers, Ravi Mhatre, and Peter Nieh. While the firm is based in Menlo Park, California, it maintains a global presence, operating in India, China, Israel, Europe, and Southeast Asia. The firm is committed to pursuing social change, particularly in the worlds of finance and technology. Over one third of the companies in its portfolio are fronted by women, and the Lightspeed Scout Program seeks to recruit and mentor investors from under-represented communities. Lightspeed Venture Partners has invested in more than 400 companies since its founding, and reports to be currently managing $10.5 billion of committed capital.
Lightspeed Venture Partners works with companies across all stages of development and funding. The firm reports that "of more than 400 companies we've partnered with since our founding, a third have either IPO’d or been acquired," with 15 of those IPOs happening in the last decade. Some of the firm's portfolio companies that have gone public through an IPO include Snap, Informatica, Ciena, and TerraVia (formerly Solazyme).
